Agricultural Ministers release “Guelph Statement”.

In their joint “Guelph Statement” Canada's federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Agriculture set the direction for the next agricultural framework. Their shared vision for the next agricultural policy framework will position our agri-food producers, processors and others in the sector for continued success as world leaders in sustainable agriculture, and will enable a globally competitive sector. Ministers also acknowledged and recognized the hard work of everyone involved in maintaining the strong food supply chain for Canadians during COVID-19.

Labelling foods with genetically modified ingredients has been a contentious debate. Some argue labelling is unnecessary and causes undue alarm. Others suggest consumers have a right to know. There remains a question as to whether it matters to consumers and whether labels will make any difference at all even if we do label. Today, Beverley Hale, U of G Associate Vice-President Research (Agri-Food Partnership) announced the appointment of two Research Program Directors. Dr. Weersink will cover Agri-Food and Rural Policy, Trade & Markets, Productive Land Capacity, and Strong Rural Communities. Dr.

Congratulation! FARE Emeritus Karl Meilke and two FARE PhD graduates won the Publication of Enduring Quality Award of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society.

FARE Emeritus Karl Meilke, together with FARE PhD graduates Zahoor ul Haq and Hina Nazli were rewarded with the Publication of Enduring Quality Award of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society for their 2008 article, "Implications of High Food Prices for Poverty in Pakistan." in Agricultural Economics, 39, 477-484.

Congratulations to FARE students Amanda Norris and Radine Kruisselbrink for their success at the Annual Canadian Agricultural Economics Society Meeting Awards

Amanda received the Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award for her MSc thesis, “Context Specific Factors Affecting Consumer Preferences for Antibiotic and Hormone Use During the Production of Beef in Canada.” 

FARE faculty and Department Chair Andreas Boecker has been appointed to the Expert Panel on the Socio-Economic Impacts of Science and Health Misinformation by the Council of Canadian Academies.

Alan Ker, OAC Research Chair in Agricultural Risk and Policy and Director of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Policy has been named Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (CAES).

Congratulations! FARE faculty Brady Deaton and co-authors have won the Outstanding Article Award of the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (CJAE).

Brady Deaton, McCain Family Chair in Food Security, won the Outstanding CJAE Article Award by the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (CAES) with co-authors Alexander Scholz (MSc student, FARE) and Bethany Lipka (Research Associate, FARE)  for their paper, An empirical assessment of food security on First Nations in Canada.” Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics. 

Congratulations! FARE faculty Yu Na Lee in author team winning the 2020 Best Paper Award in Applied Risk Analysis.

Yu Na Lee, Assistant Professor with FARE since 2017, won the Best Paper Award in Applied Risk Analysis by Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, Applied Risk Analysis Section, with co-authors Marc Bellemare, University of Minnesota, and David Just, Cornell University, for their paper, “Producer Attitudes toward Output Price Risk: Experimental Evidence from the Lab and from the Field.” American Journal of Agricultural Economics. 102.3 (2020): 806-825.
