UPDATE – General Information About Tariffs When making purchases for goods coming from the US, please keep the following information in mind; For the tariffs that came into effect Mar 4, there is a very specific list of products impacted, not all goods shipping from the US are covered New tariffs could be imposed any time, and current ones can be removed, the situation is very fluid right now Rules of origin apply to determine whether a good is considered US made, these are complex and must be determined on a case by case basis with help from our customs broker Tariffs only apply when the goods cross the border, due to the potential for fast and frequent changes, we can't determine whether a product will be impacted until we know when it will cross Current tariffs do not apply for goods that were in transit as of Mar 4 When negotiating contracts and setting up purchase orders going forward, please do your best to incorporate Incoterms of DDP - Delivered Duty Paid, this means that any import taxes including tariffs are paid by the supplier and not by the University Questions should be directed to purchasing.helpdesk@uoguelph.ca March 4, 2025 UPDATE - Tariffs on Incoming Goods from the United States Categories of goods covered by tariffs taking effect March 4, 2025 include; Food, alcohol & spirits including wine & beer, apparel & footwear, appliances, cosmetics, furniture and other items. Prices of purchased goods may be impacted if any of the tariff items are inputs to finished goods. The University has many supplier contracts in place that contain clauses around price increases, Purchasing Services will fully make use of these to manage and contain costs. Tariffs on Incoming Goods from the United States As of March 4, 2025 the government of the United States has imposed a 25% tariff on goods shipping from Canada to the US. The Canadian government has imposed retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion in goods shipping from the US to Canada starting with tariffs on $30 billion in goods immediately following by tariffs on the remaining $125 billion in goods in 21 days’ time. Tariffs will remain in effect until the US government withdraws tariffs on Canadian goods. A detailed list of impacted goods has not yet been released. Purchasing Services will post the list and any related links as soon as the information has been provided by the Canadian government.
