TARIFFS UPDATE – Validation of correct tariffs
Suppliers have started to provide quotes including tariff charges, in some cases inappropriately. In order to validate whether a product or service is actually subject to a tariff surcharge, you should request the Harmonized Schedule (HS) code for the product. This coding is part of an international system used to classify traded products to assess tariffs and taxes. If the tariff is applicable, it should show on the quote or invoice as a separate line item called “surcharge”. Tariffs are not subject to HST.
Current tariffs will apply if;
1. The HS code appears on one of the two lists;
List of products from the US subject to 25% tariffs effective Mar 4, 2025
List of products from the US subject to 25% tariffs effective Mar 13, 2025
AND
2. 2. The country of origin is the US. NOTE – this means where the goods are MADE, not where they are exported from.
Both lists are in effect until further notice, those with later dates do not replace the previous lists.
The Canadian government is planning to release a new list to goods subject to the tariff on April 2, when that happens an update will be provided.
