Welcome to the updated Flora Ontario Integrated Botanical Information System (FOIBIS) a fully searchable data base by scientific or common names including several thousand synonyms from the Ontario Plant List (Newmaster et al. 2005). The list is also published as a book with additional information as the “Flora Ontario” by Newmaster and Ragupathy 2012, which can be ordered by contacting Dr Newmaster (snewmast@uoguelph.ca).
FOIBIS includes about 5,456 species, including vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens that have naturalized in the province of Ontario. It includes native species as well as some ornamentals, weeds, invasive alien plants, arctic disjuncts and agricultural plants. Information about phytogeography, rarity, a vegetation alpha code system, and latest botanical nomenclature. The following information is provided for each species: family, genus and species names; scientific synonyms; up to 2 common names; a French name if available; vegetation code; Bayer code; coding for rarity, alien (weed), native, life form, life cycle; medicinal notes; available web-pictures link and other related information.
FOIBIS was created by Dr Steven Newmaster and Dr Subramanyam Ragupathy at the BIO-OAC Herbarium, Center for Biodiversity Genomics, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph. The plant is list is updated regularly with latest taxonomic updates from our campaign, “Barcoding the Plants of Canada” (), which thorough the Barcode of life data base (BOLD) integrates with several international plant list including the “Catalog of Life” (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/info/databases), Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG - http://www.mobot.org/mobot/research/apweb/) and “The Plant List” (http://www.theplantlist.org/), which is a Collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Missouri Botanical Gardens.
