Course Delivery

Course will be delivered in-person.  There will be no recordings of seminar discussions.

Course Synopsis:

This course will examine how masculinity and femininity has been constructed in popular culture using women’s magazines as a source. Careful attention will be paid to the intersections of gender, race and class.  Students will regularly give short presentations on material from the magazine database. In addition to analyzing some outstanding texts in this field, students will write an original essay on a topic of their choice. 

Methods of Evaluation and Weights:

1. Seminar Discussion and Participation - 25%
2. Presentation – 10%
3. Essay 1 (5 pages) –20 %
4. Essay Proposal for Essay 2 – 5%
5. Essay 2 (15-20 Pages) – 40%

Texts and/or Resources Required:

There is no textbook for the class. All assigned readings will be available through Ares.
