Course Synopsis:

This course is an introduction to researching and writing local history. Students will gather information on the History of the Arboretum, both from the Guelph Archives and from conducting oral history interviews. They will then work as a group to design and write a book for the Arboretum’s 50th anniversary in Summer 2020.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, student will have learned to:

  • Conduct archival research
  • Conduct oral history interviews
  • Write local history based on archival and oral history research

Prerequisites:

  1. Take 10 credits; Minimum grade 050
  2. Take 1.5 credits; Minimum grade 050; From Subject HIST; From Level 300.

Method of Evaluation and Weights:

Three oral history interviews + reflection - 30%
Group Assignment – book details/Table of Contents - 20%
Draft of Chapter - 15%
Draft final book project - 35%
