The class will take place in person, via 2x1h20m lectures per week.

Course Synopsis: 

Few activities better suit global histories of the modern world than sport. During the twentieth  century, sports have been integral to mass culture and everyday life around the world, reflecting and shaping wider political and socio-economic processes. Covering key themes in the history of the modern world – such as race, war, gender, and nationalism – this course analyzes modern sport from a global perspective, and examines the relationship between sports and wider, global trends. With a primary emphasis on the “global game” of football (soccer), the material covered  will include a range of sports, countries and themes around the globe that helped in the shaping of the twentieth century.

Methods of Evaluation and Weights:

Short assignments (2): 30% (15% each)
Essay plan: 10%
Essay: 35%
Final exam: 25% 

Texts and/or Resources Required:

There is no textbook for the class. All assigned readings – generally one per week – will be available on the HIST*2130 Courselink site.
