Aqualab Research
The Hagen Aqualab facilitates research on a wide variety of aquatic organisms, such as microorganisms, animals and plants, living in marine, brackish or fresh water habitats from arctic, temperate or tropical climes.
Researchers
Dr. Ackerman, Josef:
The Ackerman lab’s research goals are to understand the physical mechanisms of ecological interactions in aquatic systems. More specifically, Dr. Ackerman has spent years studying the intricacies of freshwater mussel feeding mechanisms. These benthic suspension feeders create flows to lead food particles to their mouths, and the processes that allow this to happen have been thoroughly investigated by Dr. Ackerman. Following in the same vein of research, Dr. Ackerman has also made use of the Aqualab facilities to study the reproduction of freshwater mussels. Many of these molluscs are broadcast spawners (release sperm and eggs into the water column), and the Ackerman lab’s research has worked the understand the ways in which physical conditions, such as turbulent flow, affect the success of this reproduction method. Ultimately, Dr. Ackerman’s findings are applied in the field in order to help conservation efforts to protect these freshwater mussels, many of which are currently at risk.
Dr. Bernier, Nicholas:
Dr. Bernier’s research is centered around the study of the stress response in vertebrates and how it is transferred into a neuroendocrine signal. In Aqualab, Dr. Bernier and his team have conducted many experiments using zebrafish, Danio rerio, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, as models. These experiments examined a multitude of stressors such as hypoxia, environmental ammonia and cryptobia infection and the neuroendocrine responses that they trigger. More specifically, Dr. Bernier’s lab places a special focus on studying the function of the corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) system. Another area of particular interest in the relation between the studied stress responses and the regulation of growth and appetite. Ultimately, the results of this research are to be applied on a broader scale in order to explain concepts of evolution and physiological adaptation.
Dr. Heyland, Andreas:
Dr. Heyland and his team’s work in the Aqualab focus on the study of endocrine and neuroendocrine systems of marine invertebrates in relation to their development. More specifically, their research has made use of the purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, as a model to determine the roles of different hormones and neuroreceptors, such as thyroid hormones (Taylor and Heyland, 2018) and histamine (Sutherby et al. 2013) in larval and juvenile development. Dr. Heyland has also used Aqualab’s facilities for research on the effects of declining freshwater calcium levels on different species of Daphnia, a freshwater crustacean which has high calcium requirements due to the composition of its shell.
Dr. Gillis, Todd:
The general focus of the Gillis lab is the vertebrate heart and how it can remodel itself whilst under stress. In order to study this topic, Dr. Gillis has conducted many studies in the Aqualab, examining the responses of zebrafish, Danio rerio, rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and hagfish hearts to a multitude of stressors, such as temperature changes and anoxia. The analysis of these responses on scales ranging from the whole organism to the molecular level has provided Dr. Gillis and his team with a thorough understanding of the process of cardiac remodelling. The Gillis lab’s work on the mechanisms of fish hearts have also revealed many potential insights into the evolution of the vertebrate heart. These insights can be applied on a broad scale to explain the observed differences in the circulatory systems of different vertebrate classes.
Dr. Laberge, Frederic:
Dr. Laberge’s research is focused on understanding how varied brain structures and sizes affect the functions of organisms and understanding the evolution and plasticity of the nervous system. The Laberge team has pursued this goal with the help of many behavioural studies conducted in the Aqualab using amphibians such as the fire bellied toad, Bombina orientalis, and fish such as the mangrove rivulus, Kryptolebias marmoratus. One such study (Lewis et al. 2019) examined the gene expression generated as a result of conditioning fire bellied toads to react a pattern on a screen to receive food as a reward. Dr. Laberge is also working on determining indicators of cognitive and ecolofical performance and chronic stress in fish using the Aqualab facilities. Said indicators will allow for better ecological and environmental evaluations of fish populations in the wild, and the development of less stressful fish sampling techniques.
Dr. Van Der Kraak, Glen:
Dr. Van Der Kraak’s research in Aqualab has long focused on two main topics, the regulation of ovarian function in teleost fish, and the effects of various pollutants on the reproductive success of fish. He has made use of zebrafish, Danio rerio, fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, rainbow darters, Etheostoma caeruleum, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, as model organisms to learn more about the reproductive patterns of fish, and the ways that various contaminants influence them. Said contaminants include municipal wastewater, pulp mill effluents and by-products of oil sand exploitation. The end goal of this research is to determine ways to predict the effects of chemicals on whole organisms using in vitro techniques and to find which endocrine pathways are most sensitive to contaminants.
Dr. Vickaryous, Matthew:
Dr. Vickaryous’ research is focused on the mechanisms of tissue regeneration and scar-free wound healing in the leopard gecko, Eublepharis macularius. More specifically, the Vickaryous lab specializes on the naturally occurring tail regeneration that occurs in the leopard gecko and all of the mechanisms that make it possible to regrow a completely functional tail. Dr. Vickaryous’ research is equally focused on analyzing the mechanisms of scar-free wound healing, another phenomenon very well represented in the leopard gecko. Unlike mammals, these geckos can heal cutaneous wounds completely without any scarring and the Vickaryous lab aims to elucidate exactly what makes this possible.
Dr. Wright, Patricia:
Dr. Wright’s environmental physiology lab has long centered its research on the metabolism and excretion of nitrogen in fish. In more recent years, Dr. Wright has been conducting research on the amphibious mangrove rivulus, Kryptolebias marmoratus. This unique fish species is capable of surviving for weeks outside of water and can also endure water conditions with wide ranges of temperatures, pH, salinity, oxygen levels, and hydrogen sulfide levels. Dr. Wright and her team has been looking into the physiological adaptations that allow the rivulus to achieve such feats. These adaptations include adjustable gill surface area, the growth of additional blood vessels to facilitate cutaneous respiration, remodelling of skeletal muscles, and excretion of ammonia in gaseous form. The latter linking back to Dr. Wright’s expertise with nitrogenous waste excretion in fish.
