A New Playbook: Lang Students Pitch Bold Ideas for a Thriving Gryphons Athletics Community
During the Fall 2024 Semester, the Lang x Gryphons Sports Communication Pitch Competition brought together bright young minds in sport media for a thrilling culmination of creativity, research, and collaboration. As part of the Communication and Media Strategy in Sport (SPMT 2220) course, students had the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas to Guelph Gryphons Athletics executives, with the goal of enhancing fan avidity and engagement. This year, the competition resulted in a two-way tie.
Winning group #1, Roar & Soar: The Gryphon Fan Experience, proposed the incorporation of new fan traditions to enhance fan experience. This pitch was designed by Lang students, Joey Breen, Rory Krnjevic, Anthony Lamanna, Sydney Lunney, and Emily Posthumus.
"Winning the pitch competition is a testament to the valuable lessons we've learned throughout the year from Dr. Lebel. It has given us a newfound understanding of how to be successful in the sports industry. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Gryphon Athletics to bring our idea to life, showcasing the potential of what young professionals can achieve with the right guidance and passion for sports media."

Winning group #2, Gryphs Within, designed their pitch to bridge the gap between athletes and the Guelph community by sharing authentic, behind-the-scenes stories that celebrate the unique journeys of the Guelph Gryphons. The campaign was uniquely proposed as a student-led media initiative, powered by Guelph Athletic Media & Entertainment. “I continue to be amazed and comforted for the future with the quality of students we see coming through the program,” said Scott McRoberts, Director of Gryphon Athletics. “The in-depth knowledge, professionalism and quality of delivery from all these groups was impressive.”
"I am very proud to be part of the winning 2024 Lang x Sports Communication Championship group. Our win reflects the teamwork and dedication we poured into this class and project. The opportunity to bring our ideas to life through this class is very special, and I am grateful to be part of this experience that pushed me to grow and refine my professional skills.” -

"Our varsity Student-Athletes dedicate significant time, energy and focus to being their best—and I saw the same qualities at the Lang pitch contest today. Women’s sports haveseen an important rise in viewership lately - due in part to accessibility and marketing. These students brought real strategies and ingenuity to spark engagement at Varsity events—and as a coach and fan of incredible athletes from the Women’s Basketball team, I can’t thank these students enough for their thoughtful solutions. I’m very excited to see them put into play!”
