September 11: Wine Enters the Curriculum at the University of Guelph

In his previous life as a restaurateur, University of Guelph professor Bruce McAdams realized he didn’t know much about wine.

“I was buying wine and making a wine list as a manager of a restaurant and I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. I didn’t know anything about wine,” McAdams said.

He certainly could have benefitted from the two separate wine appreciation and knowledge courses he has helped bring to the U of G campus starting later this month.

September 6: Marketing Professor Educates Baltic Sea Cruisers

Dr. Brent McKenzie of the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies was recently the featured lecturer on the ship Black Watch on a Baltic Cities cruise.  Brent, who is an expert on the Baltic Sea region, conducted public presentations on the people and food culture of the Baltic sea region; Soviet Dark tourism; and the history of Tallinna Kaubamaja, a leading Estonian department store.  

September 5: Music Can Help Make the Meal, University of Guelph Research Suggests

To university students, a restaurant’s musical taste is important as its décor, says a University of Guelph researcher.

Kevin Chang, a master’s student and researcher in U of G’s Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies, says music can subconsciously affect diners’ experiences, in addition to food and service quality.

In his research, he found the music must not only be good – however diners define it – but it must be appropriate for the establishment.

August 29: Olympic Runner Returns Home to Hamilton

CBC News interviewed Reid Coolsaet, Olympic marathoner and CME Alumnus, about his return from the Olympics and his plans for the future.

The next milestone in Olympic marathoner Reid Coolsaet's life doesn't involve running.

“I'm looking to buy a house over there,” he said, pointing to a row of backyards that lines Westdale's Churchill Park.

The 33-year-old Hamiltonian returned home last week from the Olympics after a little bit of traveling.

August 22: The Harvard Model United Nations Conference

Guelph's delegation to the Harvard Model United Nations Conference is currently seeking delegates for the upcoming year. This program allows for delegations coming from 65+ countries from all over the world to attend a Mock United Nations conference, representing committees including UNICEF, WHO, WTO etc.  

The conference this year will be held in Melbourne, Australia on March 18-22, 2013.

Restaurateurs committed to buying local food are contributing to an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable food system, says a University of Guelph expert on the restaurant business. But buying local is far from a complete sustainable approach to food service.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) and the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP) present the 2nd Annual UGSRP Forum on "Topics in Sustainability", Wednesday October 10th, 2012. The event is free of charge and will be held at the University of Guelph with a reception to follow. 

August 17: No Reason to be Concerned about Food Prices

While markets look at demand rationing in the U.S. for grains, prices for corn, soybeans and other commodities are likely to remain high due to the unprecedented drought Americans are experiencing this summer.

But as farmers in that country deal with severe climatic conditions, near-perfect growing conditions in most of Canadian farmland and skyrocketing corn prices mean many farmers in this country are cashing in.
