March 18: University of Guelph alumnus and industry leader, Ken Otto, to receive MBA Distinguished Leader Award
Ken Otto, one of Canada’s leaders in hospitality and food service, will return to the University of Guelph on May 7 to receive the MBA Distinguished Leader Award from the College of Business and Economics. An alumnus of the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management (HFTM), Otto is currently president, family dining division and chief development officer of CARA Operations Limited, Canada’s largest full service restaurant company.
The MBA Distinguished Leader Award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the food and agri-business sector, the hotel and tourism sector or have conducted business in a manner that exemplifies the principles of sustainable commerce. Throughout his distinguished career, Otto’s contributions have spanned some of North America’s top restaurant franchises and consulting firms.
Prior to joining CARA, he held senior roles at Boston Pizza, where he was executive vice-president of operations, and most recently chief operating officer. Otto was also the director, franchise operations and development for Moxie’s Classic Grill. In addition to his current role at CARA, he was previously general manager, flight kitchen-airline services, and chief operating officer, air terminal restaurants.
Throughout his career, Otto has been a strong ambassador of the University of Guelph and is currently a member of the HFTM Policy Advisory Board. He was also director of the HAFA Alumni Association from 1988 to 1990.
The award will be presented May 7 during the MBA residential week dinner where Otto will deliver a keynote address to attendees.
