September 7: CME Dean Featured in the Globe and Mail
Prof. Julia Christensen Hughes, Dean of the College of Management and Economics, was featured in Monday's Globe and Mail with her article, "University lectures: Why they're not the best way to learn".
Christensen Hughes was interviewed for a Q & A-style article on effective and ineffective lecturing in the classroom. In the article, she discusses how lectures are a traditional method of teaching and can be useful in transferring knowledge if the professor is able to communicate his or her passion, tell stories and take breaks for questions. She also talks about how current PhD programs focus on the research portion of becoming a professor but not enough on the teaching aspect of the position.
Christensen Hughes is an advocate for change within higher education and has helped facilitate many national, provincial and local events focused on improving the quality of teaching and learning. Her work on academic integrity has garnered national and international attention.
