Organizational leadership expert discusses research at Hesburgh Lecture

The University of Notre Dame’s iconic Hesburgh Lecture Series recently made its debut at the University of Guelph, welcoming the U of G community to explore the topic of effective leadership with professor Mike Crant, an expert in the field of organizational leadership. The Hesburgh Lecture Series is renowned for promoting intellectual dialogue with distinguished Notre Dame faculty.

Speaker series event inspires students to become social entrepreneurs

Members of the University of Guelph community were given expert advice on building a sustainable enterprise by local business leaders at last week’s Bigger Picture Series event, hosted by the University of Guelph’s Centre for Business and Student Enterprise (CBaSE) and Enactus, a student-led social entrepreneurship association. The event welcomed a panel of four entrepreneurs who have personally experienced developing a new venture.

Accounting students recognized at awards celebration

University of Guelph Accounting students were recently recognized for their outstanding academic achievements at the annual Academic Excellence in Accounting Awards dinner held at the OAC Centennial Arboretum Centre. There were more than 65 people in attendance including representatives from Manulife, CPA Ontario, Embree & Co. LLP, KPMG LLP, RLB LLP, Collins Barrow, Robert Half, BDO Canada LLP and the University of Guelph Board of Governors.

How does nutrition labeling affect consumer behaviour?

From low-fat to fat-free, sugar-free to no sugar added, it’s easy to get confused by food labels. If you have trouble making healthy choices at the grocery store, a new food labeling system could help make grocery shopping easier.

Marketing and consumer studies professors Tirtha Dhar and Tanya Mark, along with Alison Duncan, a professor in the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, are working with a Canadian food retailer to study the effectiveness of the store’s point-based nutrition labeling system that ranks foods according to their nutritional value.

College of Business and Economics faculty featured in national media

Two researchers in the College of Business and Economics, Dean Julia Christensen Hughes and professor Timothy Dewhirst were recently featured in national media. Christensen Hughes was interviewed by CBC about modern technology and its patent role in cheating and Dewhirst authored an op-ed for the Globe and Mail discussing Scotiabank’s deal for the Air Canada Centre’s naming rights. 

Marketing professors connect research with industry at symposium

Research from marketing and consumer studies professors is helping industry professionals make more effective decisions at work thanks to enhanced knowledge of marketing analytics. Recently, at the Harnessing Analytics Symposium, marketing practitioners connected with University of Guelph researchers to learn how they can create better campaigns and new product offerings by leveraging pertinent data.

Incoming MA Management student to investigate crop viability through Food From Thought research assistantship program

Incoming MA Management student Andrew Nixon is among 12 University of Guelph graduate students who will investigate global food issues as part of the Food From Thought research assistantship program from the Arrell Food Institute. A Bachelor of Commerce (Leadership and Organizational Management) alumnus, Nixon's research will focus on enabling managers to more efficiently and effectively diffuse new crops into the food system. His research is timely given the effects of climate change. 

Faculty, student attend PRME Global Forum in NYC

College of Business and Economics professor Kathleen Rodenburg and third-year Accounting student, Dan Gilmour attended the PRME Global Forum in New York City this week, joining more than 300 attendees who are helping to shape the future of business and management education, and support the global effort to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
