Hotelier icon and 2016 Pinnacle Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Michael Beckley, has been named the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management’s Executive-in-Residence for 2017. From March 14^th to 16^th, Beckley will be visiting the University of Guelph to share his experiences and offer advice to Hospitality and Tourism Management students. Beckley is currently serving as Director, CBRE Hotels, and was formerly the Senior Vice President, Lodging Development for Marriott Hotels of Canada.   

Four student teams from the University of Guelph’s School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management recently competed at the Hospitality and Tourism Case Competition (HTCC) at Ryerson University winning first and second place in their respective categories.

A team of four University of Guelph real estate and housing students (BComm) took home multiple top place finishes, including first place overall and $5,000, at this year’s Ryerson “Expand your Empire” Case Competition in Toronto on Saturday March 4.

Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute brought home the $500 top prize from the inaugural GryphBiz Case Competition held at the University of Guelph on March 2. The competition, which challenged teams to respond to a business case featuring Boston Pizza, welcomed four Guelph high schools to Macdonald Hall, the newly-renovated home of business at the university.

College of Business and Economics dean Julia Christensen Hughes recently facilitated a collaborative discussion with fellow business school deans from across North America about growing strong and sustainable businesses and business leaders. The discussion took place at the Responsible Management Education (RME) Affinity Group meeting at the recent AACSB International Deans Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Dan Sparrow came to the University of Guelph’s MBA program with decades of professional experience working with multinational corporations such as Hewlett-Packard, Xerox and Danaher in North America, Europe, and Asia. He decided to pursue the sustainable commerce field because he wanted an education that would enhance his understanding of how social and environmental policies can act as profit supporting strategies.

Fourth year BComm Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) students are putting their business skills to the test this winter through an intensive capstone course which has them solving real-world business challenges facing actual hospitality and food service businesses.

Taught in the Active Learning Classroom in Macdonald Hall, the Hospitality and Tourism Industry Consultation Course (HTM4190) brings significant industry partners to campus to collaborate on projects with Guelph BComm students.

This March, teams of Guelph high school students will get a unique opportunity to experience a university business case competition before starting their post-secondary studies.  The GryphBiz Case Competition, which will be held at Macdonald Hall - the University of Guelph’s newly-renovated home for business - will unite business-minded students from four local high schools to compete against each other in developing the best solution to a real-world problem.
