On November 22, the Guelph Sports Management Association (GSMA) teamed up with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) to host the first MLSE case competition at the University of Guelph.

The competition provides students the chance to compete against one another to move on to the finals in downtown Toronto, where they compete for the shot at a paid internship with MLSE.

At the U of G competition last month, six representatives from MLSE were on campus to watch and judge the competition.

“We were very excited to have MLSE representatives on campus to hear the ideas and recommendations from U of G students,” said Lauren Georgopoulos, Lang B.Comm. student and Events Manager for GSMA. “Having this experience allows students to demonstrate their critical thinking skills and gives them hands-on experience in the sports and entertainment industry.”

In the end, the judges selected two winning teams.

Team 5 featured four U of G students, including:

  • Justin Gibson, B.Comm. (Management Economics and Finance)
  • Keegan Gaunt, B.Comm. (Management Economics and Finance)
  • Bryn Deering (Computer Science)
  • Mark Patton (Environmental Governance)

Team 8 featured two Lang Business students, including:

  • Rosemary Kilgore, B.Comm. (Leadership and Organizational Management)
  • Shaelyn Wagenaar, B. Comm. (Marketing Management)

Congratulations to the winning teams and best of luck in the final competition.

GSMA offers exciting opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about the sports industry. They aim to connect students with industry professionals and organizations through social events, competitions, workshops, and more.
