Two University of Guelph faculty members and a staff member have received 2021 Minister’s Awards of Excellence from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU).
In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Guelph will host virtual events and on-campus initiatives and share stories throughout February.
Many of the events have been organized by the University’s Cultural Diversity Office within the Department of Student Experience and the Guelph Black Students Association (GBSA).
“Black History Month is a time of reflection, celebration and inspiration,” said Abigail Barrett, program coordinator with the Cultural Diversity Office.

Meshing Indigenous and Western ways of knowing and amplifying often unheard voices are the goals for two University of Guelph researchers who will receive a total of $1.9 million in new federal funding under the prestigious Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program.
The funding is part of a $151-million investment announced Jan. 12 by François-Philippe Champagne, federal minister of innovation, science and industry, for 188 new and renewed CRCs at 43 research institutions across Canada.
Free farm business management skills ranging from farm business planning to maintaining mental health will be offered through a new self-paced, virtual course being launched this month by the University of Guelph and partner organizations.
Believed to be the first of its kind in Canada, U of G’s new “Foundations in Agricultural Management” online certificate course will enable farmers, and especially younger producers, to brush up on their farm business management skills.
The Guelph Turfgrass Institute (GTI) has been a resource for the Canadian turfgrass industry for more than three decades. Founded in 1987, the GTI began as a partnership among the University of Guelph, the Ontario government and the turfgrass industry. Today the institute operates as a centre of research, education and service.
The institute previously occupied land that was slated for community development. In summer 2021, the GTI officially moved to its new location at 364 College Ave E.
A long-time food scientist at the University of Guelph whose discoveries in everything from trans fats to chocolate have helped improve human health and agri-food sustainability has been awarded one of Canada’s highest honours.
Dr. Alejandro Marangoni was named Dec. 29 as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Marangoni was among 135 Canadians, including U of G professor emeritus Dr. Barry Smit, named in 2021 to the Order of Canada.

The Department of Food Science is pleased to welcome Alice Marciniak as assistant professor in dairy science. Marciniak will begin the role on January 4, 2022.
Marciniak will develop a high-calibre research program, with a focus on dairy science, while teaching undergraduate students in the B.Sc. food science major, specialized graduate courses in dairy chemistry and technology, and supervise graduate students.
