International animal welfare expert to speak at U of G’s Presant Memorial Lecture

How to sustainably improve human’s relations with farm animals is the focus of an upcoming public lecture at the University of Guelph.

Dr. Linda Keeling, a Professor of Animal Welfare at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences will deliver the keynote address at the upcoming F.W. Presant Memorial Lecture on Monday March 17, 2025 at the Arboretum Centre, University of Guelph. Her talk, entitled “Scientific perspectives on the sustainable development of our relationship with farm animals” will delve into research on how farmers can successfully incorporate sustainable animal welfare practices into their operations, while remaining profitable.

Her research explores animal social behavior, motivation, and cognition, as well as the effects of housing and management on animal welfare. She is active in multidisciplinary projects and in science-based animal welfare policy development and is a member of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare. She works in various projects for the European Food Safety Authority and is a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Forestry and Agriculture.

She received her PhD in Zoology from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and has worked previously for the Scottish Agricultural Colleges. She also has roots at the University of Guelph, having completed postdoctoral studies with Professors Ian Duncan and Frank Hurnik in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science.
