New Director Named for the School of Environmental Sciences
Prof. Jon Warland has been appointed as the new director of the School of Environmental Sciences (SES).
“It is an honour to have the chance to help SES move forward,” shares Warland. “We are surrounded by transition, and this is an exciting time to work with the school, and the rest of the college, to continue our reputation for excellence. Many opportunities are before us, and it is a pleasure to engage with all of the amazing work going on throughout SES.”
Warland has served as SES interim director since May 2015. He joined the University of Guelph in 1999 and his research focuses on understanding land-air interactions and how they are modified by vegetation.
“Jon has been an excellent leader in SES and will continue to do great things as director,” says Wayne Caldwell, Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College. “He is a teaching innovator who is always looking for new ways to instruct and engage students. He will bring that same ingenuity and drive to this leadership position.”
Jon received his PhD from the University of Guelph in 1999. From 2009 – 2012 he was associate director for undergraduate studies in SES and lead the creation of the current environmental sciences major. He has supervised six PhD students and has co-authored 50 refereed publications. Jon is also an officer and former unit chief of the Guelph unit of St. John Ambulance where he helps manage operation of the division and roughly 60 volunteers.
