Through ongoing, concrete reflection on individual works of art and through the careful study of philosophical texts, we will try to understand what art is and what role it plays in human culture. We will focus especially on two great philosophical works—Hegel’s Aesthetics and Dewey’s Art as Experience—supplemented by various other readings, including readings by contemporary artists.
