Course Synopsis:
The study of animal minds will be the focus of Philosophy 6740 in the fall of 2022. We begin with an historical overview staring with the instinct debates in the 1890s through to the decline of behaviourism (sort of) about 100 years later. We then turn to contemporary topics relevant to the study of animal welfare including the nature of animal emotion, fish and invertebrate pain, the nature and significance of sociality, non-linguistic belief, and conceptions of death. Students will write two short papers and are encouraged to work on philosophical projects relevant to their theses.
