Classical and Modern Cultures

Why Study Classical and Modern Cultures at U of G?

Culture is about what a group of people believe, their traditions, and what they value. This includes things like art, music, politics, history, language, religion, and stories. With how increasingly connected the world has become, there is a need to find new and exciting ways to make it more inclusive.

In Classical and Modern Cultures, you will explore how culture has changed over time, from ancient times to now. This will help you understand the problems we face today and how we can solve them in the future.

You will specialize in one of three areas, where you can focus on courses centered around:

  1. Classical Studies: Dive into ancient cultures, languages, literature, history, and art to see how they shaped today's world. This includes democracy, philosophy, entertainment, and symbols in modern marketing.
  2. Global European Studies: Explore European culture, history, art, and society from a global perspective. Learn about myths, migrations, and how cultural interactions shaped Europe, and discover strategies to address unfair treatment.
  3. Languages and Linguistics: Understand how languages work and connect, enhancing your communication skills and cultural awareness. This area is useful for careers such as speech therapy or translation.
