General Admission Requirements
Transferring from a College
Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year of study in an appropriate two or three-year College diploma will be considered for admission. In addition to presenting the minimum cumulative average from college, applicants must also present the high school subject requirements (or equivalent) for their program of interest.
Transferring from a University
Applicants who have completed a minimum of 2.0 credits of study will be considered for admission. Those with less than 2.0 completed credits are typically considered for fall entry only. In addition to presenting the minimum cumulative average from university, applicants must also present the high school subject requirements (or equivalent) for their program of interest.
Note: Transfer students are not eligible for direct entry into co-op. Those who apply for co-op will be considered for the regular program. Once you are a student at the U of G you can connect with your Program Counsellor to determine whether you are eligible for co-op. For more information, visit Co-operative Education and Career Services
Admission Requirements and Entry Points by Program
Admission requirements vary by program. In addition to presenting the minimum cumulative average from previous post-secondary studies, applicants must present the specific subject requirements, or equivalents, for their program of interest.
Note: Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Space in some programs is limited and admission is dependent on the quantity and quality of applications received as well as space availability.

You must submit official transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended, including:
- High school (including summer school)
- University
- College
- Night school
- Online courses taken at a provincially approved high school or learning centre
- An accredited private school or organization officially recognized or authorized as an institution of learning.
A transcript is considered official if it is produced by and bears the seal of the issuing institution. Official transcripts must be sent from the issuing institution directly to Admission Services.
Transcript Requests through OUAC: The OUAC provides an electronic transcript service for applicants who have attended High School, College, or University in Ontario. When completing your application, you can pay the OUAC to contact your former school(s) and request electronic transcripts from the issuing institution to be sent directly to Admission Services at the University of Guelph. This is recommended.
If your former high school, University, or College is not one of the schools that the OUAC can contact on your behalf, you will have to contact each institution to arrange to have your transcript(s) sent to Admission Services at applicant@uoguelph.ca.
If you are submitting transcripts or other official documents in a language other than English you must also submit notarized legal literal translations of these documents in English.
Note: We will use unofficial transcripts for initial admission consideration. Upload your unofficial high school and post-secondary transcripts through ‘My Documents’ in WebAdvisor.
Check 'My Documents' in WebAdvisor to see what documents are required to complete your application. Your application will be reviewed once all required documents have been received.
- Education Declaration: If we’ve requested an Education Declaration, we need to confirm whether or not you have completed additional studies beyond what you declared on your application. Please complete the PDF form and upload it through your WebAdvisor account.
- Post-Degree Intent Form: If you hold a degree and have applied to pursue additional studies, this form is required to confirm the intent of your future studies. Please complete the PDF form and upload it through your WebAdvisor account.
- Support Letter: In some cases, the Admission Committee may request a support letter. A support letter is your opportunity to tell Admission Services more about why you want to transfer to the University of Guelph. If your average is below the minimum admission requirements, your support letter should address your previous academic performance and explain the steps you've taken to ensure future academic success. Please submit your support letter (pdf file) through WebAdvisor.
If you're currently enrolled in your first semester at university (i.e. fall) and are applying to transfer for the winter entry point, we will require unofficial midterm grades. Transfer applicants with courses in progress will be considered for a conditional offer of admission based on available grade data.
You will be required to submit a final official transcript when your final grades are available.

Transfer Credits
Transfer credits are assessed upon admission and are typically outlined in an offer of admission.
- College Transfer Students: Normally, applicants who have completed a two-year college diploma can receive up to 5.0 credits, while applicants who have completed a three-year college diploma program can receive up to 10.0 credits.
- University Transfer Students: Normally, applicants will be eligible to receive transfer credit for each successfully completed degree-level course. A maximum of 10.0 credits can be transferred from a previously completed degree program.
To view external courses that have previously been reviewed and approved for transfer credit, please view Course Equivalencies.
Understanding your transfer credits
There are two types of transfer credit: specified and generic. A specified credit is granted when a course you've taken at another post-secondary institution is comparable or equivalent to a course that we offer at the University of Guelph. A generic credit is granted when you're eligible for degree-level credit, but the content of the course you've taken doesn't align with a University of Guelph course. Generic credits are electives and may or may not count towards the graduation requirements for the degree program you're entering.
To help you understand your transfer credit assessment, it's important to know what course numbers mean and where to find course descriptions. Each course is identified by a two-part code. The first part of the code refers to the subject area, the second to the level of the course. Courses in the 1000 series are mainly for first year students, those in the 2000 series are mainly for second year students, and those in the 3000 series are for third year students. Course descriptions can be found in the Undergraduate Calendar.
Course numbers beginning with 9 (e.g. PSYC*9110, ENGL*9210) are generic credits. To understand exactly how your transfer credits will apply to degree requirements, you should contact a Program Counsellor as soon as you accept your offer of admission.
Waiting for a Decision
Admission Committees for most programs review transfer applications and extend offers of admission on a continuing, rolling basis. Some programs, such as those with limited enrollment, only review applications after the published application deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Interested in Applying
Applications for 2025 are now open.
Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission depends on the quality and size of the applicant pool as well as the space available in individual programs. For this reason, we can’t predict the likelihood of being admitted.
If you’re in your first semester at another University, you will be eligible to apply to transfer to the U of G for the winter semester if you will have completed a minimum of 2.0 credits (four undergraduate degree-level courses) by the end of your fall semester.
Note: Final grades in your fall courses are typically required before we can make an admission decision. This means that there's a very quick turnaround between being admitted in late December or early January and the start of winter semester classes.
We do not pre-assess admissibility or transfer credits. We review and assign transfer credits during the admission process. Successful applicants are notified of their transfer credit in their offer of admission letter*.
*Due to professional accreditation standards, transfer credits for students who are admitted to the Bachelor of Engineering program are reviewed and assigned after an applicant has accepted their offer of admission
We’ve published lists of courses at other Ontario Universities that have previously been reviewed and approved for transfer credit here: Course Equivalencies by Universities.
You may also find helpful course equivalency information on ONTransfer.ca.
These resources are meant to act as a guide only; the University of Guelph reserves the right to change or cancel equivalencies at any time.
If you've previously attended College or University, you will likely be considered a transfer student for admission purposes. A mature student is someone who has been out of full-time high school for two years or more and has never enrolled at a post-secondary school.
You must declare all schools/institutions you have previously attended. The Admission Committee will consider your complete academic background when reviewing your application. In some cases, academic upgrading may be required. Please contact Admission Services for more information.
Connect with us at transferinfo@uoguelph.ca, and include the questions that you have about transferring. We can answer most questions and provide information and resources by e-mail, but if we can’t, we will provide a link to book an appointment with an Admission Counsellor.
Yes, you will be considered for transfer credit from all previously enrolled post-secondary institutions. Transfer credit cannot be pre-assessed, it will be assessed at the time of your admission.
No, all 4U prerequisites must be completed prior to beginning your studies at the University of Guelph.
You have the option of taking the appropriate subject prerequisite(s) at an Adult Learning Centre or through a Ministry of Education inspected and accredited private school course provider.
Submitting My Application and Documents
Required documents will be listed under the 'My Documents' section of your WebAdvisor account. The following document types can be uploaded through WebAdvisor:
- Uofficial high school transcript
- Unofficial post-secondary transcript
Documents not eligible for upload can be submitted to Admission Services at applicant@uoguelph.ca.
If you’ve ever attended college or university, you should select Upper-Year on the application. Your actual year/class level will be determined by the number of and which transfer credits you are granted upon admission.
You should request that OUAC send transcripts immediately so we can confirm what courses you're enrolled in. If you're admitted with conditions and accept your offer, we will also require a final, official transcript at the end of your current semester.
This form is requested when our application processing team notices a gap in your educational background and we are unsure of your activities (working, traveling, studying, etc.) during that time. The form is required to confirm that you have not enrolled at any other schools/institutions other than what you have indicated on your application. If required, the Education Declaration Form will appear in the Documents section of your WebAdvisor account. You can complete and submit it directly through your WebAdvisor account.
After I've Applied
Transfer applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis as applications become complete. Please monitor your Web Advisor account to ensure all required documents have been received. For limited enrollment programs, Admission Committees typically review all applications at once after the document submission deadline.
If you applied on the undergraduate application, you can monitor the status of your application through your OUAC and WebAdvisor accounts. Upon admission, transfer applicants will receive their offer of admission via e-mail.
We don’t have a final date by when transfer students can expect an admission decision; applications are reviewed and we send out offers on an ongoing, rolling basis.
If you have issues with your Central Login username and password, please contact Computing and Communication Services at ithelp@uoguelph.ca or 519-824-4120 ext. 58888.
It takes us some time to generate, print, and send offer letters. Unfortunately, this process isn’t automatic – usually, it will take a week or two. Please be patient, we’re working as quickly as we can to get you the information you need. Note that offer letters aren’t available for download on WebAdvisor.
Your offer letter will detail the conditions of your offer of admission and the date by when you need to meet the conditions. Offers of admission are often conditional if you have courses in progress, or we haven’t received official transcripts from your former institution(s).
Please refer to your offer of admission letter for next steps. Additionally, you should check out our Transfer Student Resource Guide, it should answer most of your questions!
Other Common Questions
We don’t share this information because it can be very misleading; the number of students admitted each year depends on the quality and size of the applicant pool. For this reason, the number of students that can be admitted this year may be totally different than the number that were admitted last year.
Yes, transfer students can apply to live in our on-campus residences. Please visit housing.uoguelph.ca for more information, and/or contact Student Housing Services at housing@uoguelph.ca. We also have an Off-Campus Living (OCL) office which includes an Off-Campus Living Advisor who can support you in finding suitable housing in the City of Guelph. Visit their website for more details.
