The Landscape Architecture program in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development is saddened to hear of the passing of Kenneth A. Mitchell, who died at age 49 after a five-year battle with ALS.  Ken graduated from the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program in 1998.  He was a tremendously talented student during his time at the University of Guelph.

Mitchell went on to have an outstanding career as an actor.  He is best known for his roles in Star Trek: Discovery and as Carol Danvers’ father in Captain Marvel.

The announcement of his passing can be found on Kenneth A. Mitchell’s Twitter account.

Here are some thoughts on Ken, written by Walter Kehm, a retired professor in Landscape Architecture:

"From L.A. to L.A.!  What a wonderful and exciting career. From a landscape designer to an esteemed film actor!  Over four years at the University of Guelph, School of Landscape Architecture, I had the privilege to know Ken as a friend.  In his thesis studio year, we talked at length about nature and his fond landscape experiences growing up in forests and lakes.  He loved our Canadian landscape.

Ken was admired by his classmates as he was always a person to provide a warm smile and lend a helping hand. I will always recall his generosity of spirit.  He wrote that “His five difficult years were mixed with so many blessings.  Each day is a gift, and we never walk alone.”  He was grateful every day for the kindness and devotion provided by his caregivers, loving wife and adoring two children.

I, and all his friends, will remain blessed that Ken crossed our paths, and through the example of his courage, caring soul and love of family, he will remain an inspiration".
