MLA Students Capture Environmental Design Competition Prize

Posted on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025

On April 5, 2025, Master of Landscape Architecture students in the first-year Studio II – Site Design course presented their projects at Fanshawe College's Environmental Design Competition in London, Ontario.

The 2025 competition explored the redevelopment of surplus public lands to provide affordable housing and respond to climate change. Individuals or groups of students were invited to create inspirational designs, imagining new affordable housing designs that incorporate climate change measures.  Each submission included problem analysis, ideation, and visualization of a new future.

Students from Vancouver Island University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Guelph, Mohawk College, Universität Osnabrück, and Fanshawe College presented ideas that explored urban intensification on surplus public lands.

Brooke Lummis and Micah Shiff’s MLA project, IMICO Lands Revitalization, located in Guelph, Ontario, stood out with its strong graphics, well-laid-out narrative, and carefully structured analysis, propelling it to a Third-Place finish, as well as the People’s Choice Award.
