Details
The Fall Watercolour Painting Series is a three week painting series hosted from 1pm-2pm on Friday October 8th, Friday October 15th and Friday October 22nd.
The workshops will build on the skills from the previous week with basic watercolour techniques being taught in the first week to an intermediate skill level painting in the last week. It is recommended that staff attend all 3 parts to the series, especially if attending the later sessions, unless you already have experience painting with watercolours.
All levels are welcome to attend the series! Not only is this series an opportunity to learn some new skills we will also explore the power of artmaking as a method of self-expression, self-care, and a pathway to learning more about one’s inner self, regardless of one's experience with art.
In Part 2 (Beginner) we will be building on the foundational skills learned in Part 1 (Basics) by spending out time together painting a pumpkin. Reference photos will be sent to you with the event link.

Materials Needed:
Watercolour paint.
- Typically comes in a tube. The cheapest “Artist’s Loft” Michaels brands paint will be sufficient for what we are doing and for beginners who haven’t worked extensively with watercolour paint. If your budget allows for it and you want a bit higher quality Windsor & Newton is a good brand to go with. You will need 3 paint colours.
- Cadmium Yellow
- Cadmium Red Pain
- Burnt Umber
Watercolour Paper.
- I recommend Strathmore cold pressed, acid free watercolour paper with a weight of 140lbs. (300g/m^2). Other brand would be fine too, just make sure it is watercolour paper and that it is cold pressed and acid free.
- You will need 3 pieces of paper, one for each part of the series. A full sheet of paper for part 1 will be needed to go through techniques. In part 2 and 3 of the watercolour painting series will be making a painting that is 5 by 7 in size.
A palette to put your paint in and for mixing colours. A palette with 6 wells is sufficient.
One Watercolour Paintbrush.
- I’d recommend a round 2 brush. Again, the cheapest synthetic brush will work fine.
- If Michaels is out of round 2 brushes, a size 1 or 3 would be fine for the size paintings we are doing.
Two cups of water. One will be a cup to clean our brushes in and the other will be a clean cup of water to add to our paint.
Paper towel. Just a couple pieces to dry our brushes when we need to.
A pencil. If you have sketching pencils I recommend bringing two pencils, one with soft lead and one with hard lead (like a 4B and a 2H). If you don’t have sketching pencils, just a regular school HB pencil will work just fine.
