The objective
of this book is to briefly analyze the coastal landscape of Hainan
Island and the major human activities and economy of the last decade of
the 20th century. An overview is given first and then more detailed
analyses are presented of six areas of the island: North-Central (NC),
Northwest (NW), Northeast (NE), East (E), Center-West (CW) and South (S)
(Fig. II). For each area the evolution of the landscape and the major
characteristics are considered, followed by an analysis of the major
human activities and the resulting economy during the 1990s. This decade
has been selected for study because of the rapid, major changes that
occurred in Hainan Island These rapid changes were triggered by central
government policies that temporarily deformed the planned landscape-landuse
evolution of the area (Hutchings, 2001). Hainan Island is one of the
major islands of China with an area of about 34 000 km2. It is located
in the South China Sea, separated from the mainland by a 30 km strait
(Fig. 12). The population is about 7. 5 million, 17 % of which are
Minorities (those not of Han origin). The island had a varied natural
and human history. |
