Zoonotic diseases
All suspected reportable or immediately notifiable diseases are reported to the CFIA, OMAFRA, and OMH, as appropriate. Specimens are forwarded to CFIA for confirmatory testing, if applicable.
Various comments will appear on lab reports that identify the presence of zoonotic agents or diseases e.g.:
“This agent/disease can pose a threat to public health. We suggest that you advise the animal’s owner of potential human health dangers. If concerned, your client should consult their physician.”
Federally reportable diseases
Under Sections 5(1) and (2) of the Health of Animals Act, "...any owner or veterinarian in Canada shall immediately report to the nearest Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) office any suspicion of the existence of reportable disease,..." namely:
