Plasma fibrignogen concentrations reflect the balance between production and consumption. Accelerated consumption of fibrinogen during hypercoagulable states may be masked by increased production associated with inflammation. Fibrinogen may be evaluated as part of a coagulation profile, or along with other acute phase proteins such as haptoglobin and serum amyloid A, depending upon the clinical condition and the species of interest.
