100 g of bedding (piled, fresh, recycled, stall bedding, or bedding packs) or variety of environmental samples.

Ship in insulated container with freezer packs.

Collection Protocol

Swab the environmental surface(s) or collect a representative sample of bedding for testing. For a bedding pile, collect bedding from 10-12 different locations. For stalls, collect from the back third of 10-12 stalls into a clean container. Mix well and transfer ~100 g into a smaller container. Refrigerate immediately.

Additional Information

Includes isolation and identification of a single mastitis pathogen belonging to Enterobacterales group (but not Salmonella) from environmental samples (e.g., Klebsiella, Serratia, E. coli). The same pathogen must be previously isolated from cases of mastitis at the same premises.
