Collection Protocol

Leave the biopsy (1/2 inch diameter in cross section, 1/2 inch long) in air while suturing and place in at least 130 mL of 10% neutral buffered formalin 3-5 minutes after the biopsy is taken.

Additional Information

This information is sent to an external laboratory. The muscle biopsy indicates the presence of PSSM but does not distinguish between the two forms. To definitively diagnose type 2 PSSM, do the muscle biopsy first followed by the PSSM1 genetic test - if the biopsy is positive but the PSSM1 genetic test is negative, this indicates type 2 PSSM.
