CTS Major and Minor
The Culture & Technologies Studies program provides an interdisciplinary option for students wanting to expand on traditional humanities scholarship. The program is designed to function on its own as a major, a minor with a different major, or as part of a double major.
In this way, the program is flexible, catering to a wide range of interests and providing flexible pathways towards many possible futures.

Doing a double-major
CTS is designed to work well as a double major alongside a traditional discipline in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences. The CTS major requires only 8 credits in CTS, leaving room for you to explore another path of study in an additional major. Up to half of your courses can be double-counted. For details about program requirements, please speak with your Faculty Advisor or a BA Counsellor.
Completing a double major requires you to plan your degree carefully and ensure you are meeting all requirements for your degree and majors. For assistance in planning your degree, you can consult the CTS Faculty Advisor (contact details here) or book an appointment with a program counsellor through the Bachelor of Arts Counselling Office webpage.
Areas of Emphasis
If you choose to major in CTS you are encouraged to choose an Area of Emphasis to focus your studies. There are three to choose from - Performance, Making & Design, Storytelling & Public Humanities, and Power, Identities & Equity - and your chosen AoE will show on your University of Guelph transcript. When you’re ready to choose one, contact an academic advisor through the Bachelor of Arts Counselling Office webpage following the process described here.
Students who choose to complete an Area of Emphasis as part of their Major must fulfill the following requirements:
- Complete 2.00 credits within the Praxis or Context courses for the area of emphasis
- If you choose Performance, Making & Design, complete CTS*3010 Digital Arts and Critical Making;
- If you choose Digital Arts & Critical Making, complete CTS*3020 Experiential Learning: Digital Storytelling and Public Humanities.
- If you choose Power, Identities & Equity, there is no additional course requirement beyond the core CTS*3000 Data and Difference.
