Dr. Brittany Luby wins 2022 Children's Picture Book Award
Dr. Brittany Luby has won the 2022 Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children's Picture Book Award for Mii maanda ezhi-gkendmaanh/This is How I Know.
The book is described as a "lyrical story-poem," and is written in both Anishinaabemowin and English. This is Luby's first time nominated for a Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award.
The winners of the Children's Picture Book Award were selected by a jury of young readers from North York's Faywood Arts-Based Curriculum School. The jury consisted of four students in grade four and one student from the grade six Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. According to the student jurors, they "love the gentle story and the vibrant colours," and said that "telling the story in both Anishinaabemowin and English was 'very cool.'"
The Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards were established in 1976 by Sylvia Schwartz in memory of her sister, Ruth, a respected Toronto bookseller. In 2004, the family renamed the awards to honour both sisters. The awards are funded through the Ruth Schwartz Foundation.
