Dynastic Fears & Threats of Marriage: Dr. Susannah Ferreira on the Spanish Nobility
Our own Dr. Susannah Humble Ferreira is a contributor with a number of (other) very prestigious scholars of Europe published to an edited collection on the Spanish nobility with high-profile Spanish academic press Sanz y Torres:
"Juana 'La Beltraneja': miedos dinásticos y amenazas de matrimonio, 1475-1530" in La nobleza española y sus espacios de poder 1480-1715, Anne J. Cruz, Alejandra Franganillo and Carmen Sanz, eds. Alcorcón: Sanz y Torres, 2021.
The subject of the study, Juana La Beltraneja (1462-1530), rivalled the claims of Isabel I as successor to Enrique IV during the War of Castilian Succession (1475-79). Dr. Ferreira's chapter examines a lesser known period of her life when she was an exile in Portugal. At the time, discussion of La Beltraneja's marriageability and potential to produce an heir were tools employed by various actors to shape diplomatic relations between Spain and Portugal.
