Congratulations to Karen Houle and Marianne Micros!Congratulations to two College of Arts faculty for seeing their work shortlisted for the Governor General’s award for literature. Marianne Micros, retired School of English and Theatre Studies faculty, has a collection of short stories on the short list. Titled Eye, the stories combine myth, folklore, and magic and is set in ancient and modern Greece, and in contemporary Europe and North America. Evil-eye curses, women healers, ghosts, a changeling form some of the subjects of this marvelous collection, published by Guernica. On the poetry shortlist is the Philosophy department’s own Karen Houle. Houle’s book of poems, The Grand River Watershed: A Folk Ecology, explores the natural history of a river in a way that transcends mere data and description. Houle combines literary and ecological modes and presents the Grand River as a complex living system. Congratulations to both and good luck!
