This past semester, two students (Matthew Acevedo and Lindsay Barron) undertook a project to evaluate hospitality student perceptions of their industry as employer.  They surveyed students from across Canada.  Their report is linked.

New Study Abroad Semester in Paris, France

The Centre for International Programs has appointed Dr. Marion Joppe, as the Director of the Winter 2015 Paris semester. This is a study abroad program where students will live in Paris, France for 4 months and take 4 courses in English for credit through the University of Guelph. The program is open to all students on campus and information sessions will be held in February 2014. If you have any further questions, please email Dr.

Professors Present Paper in Athens Greece

Mike von Massow and Bruce McAdams attended the third annual International Conference on Tourism and Hospitality Management in Athens, Greece and presented their paper on improving sustainability curriculum in our restaurant management course which was the genesis of the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project.  The paper was also selected to be published in a special issue of the Journal Touristic Issues.

 

Research in the Peruvian Amazon

Professor Justin Taillon has worked in the Peruvian Amazon three times in the past four years. His research in the region focuses on marketing-based conservation through hotels and tourism, particularly with the Ese'Eja indigenous persons from Southeastern Peru and Northeastern Bolivia. This summer he was joined by University of Guelph Environmental Engineering Professor Khosrow Farahbakhsh and three research assistants: CME PhD students Sean Hingston, HTM undergraduate student Emmanuel Cini, and environmental engineering Master's student Rachael Marshall.

Students and Professor Present Paper at HITEC

HTM students Ashley Ferreira and Fanyi Wei, as well as Professor Justin Taillon presented a paper, "Towards Understanding the Consequences of Hotel PMS Risk Aversion" at HITEC this week.  HITEC, an annual conference with more than 8,000 attendees, is being held in Minneapolis, MN, this year.  Three HTM students are attending the conference - hopefully we will have even more next year when the event is held in Los Angeles! To attend you must be an HFTP member in good standing - food and lodging expenses are covered for all student attendees.

2013 HAFA HTM Alumni Golf Tournament

The 9th Annual HAFA/HTM Alumni Association Golf Tournament held at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club on Monday, June 17th was a great success!!  Thank you to alumni, sponsors and all volunteers.

Skills Training Prepares Grad Students for Industry Jobs

Assistant Prof. Mike von Massow helps to deliver the Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) Scholarship Program which is offered by the Partnership Agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Rural Affairs. A recent At Guelph article highlight's from a grad student's perspective, how this program which integrates science, business and marketing, and helped prepare her for work in her industry.
