Passing of Former Director, Thomas F. Powers

Thomas F. Powers - Former HFTM Faculty Member

The School is saddened to announce the passing of Thomas (Tom) F. Powers on January 11th, 2015.  Dr. Powers was the 2nd Director of the School from 1979 - 1987.

Tom's wife, Jo Marie was also a long standing faculty member in the School.

We will miss you Tom.

Spotlight on Co-operative Education: Q&A with HAFA alum Kai Raphael

When guests of the new Delta Hotel Toronto enter the brand new glass-covered high rise in the heart of the city’s downtown, a HAFA grad will be at the centre of their experience. The much-anticipated opening of the hotel has been a career highlight for Kai Raphael, an alumnus whose passion for hospitality started when he was a child and developed through his experience in co-operative education.

In this Q&A, Kai talks about how his co-op experience helped to develop his career interest and accelerate his career to where it is today.

The School Welcomes Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr. Leana Reinl

This Irish Research Council awarded fellowship is co-funded by the European Union Marie Curie Programme which supports early stage research career development. Leana will spend a two year period at the University of Guelph under the mentorship of Prof.

Spotlight on Co-operative Education: Q&A with HAFA alum Nicole Jackson

Only four years after graduating with her HAFA (Co-op) degree, Nicole Jackson is managing events at one of the most exclusive event spaces in Toronto - Malaparte. Owned by Oliver & Bonacini (O&B), Malaparte is located on the sixth floor of the TIFF Bell Lightbox and often hosts luxurious events, including celebrity parties during the Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to rubbing elbows with famous faces, Nicole simply loves her work.

Now in its second year, The Frankie Tomatto’s Restaurant Innovation Competition will serve as a platform for cash incentives for Ontario College and University hospitality students to create innovative ideas or concepts for the restaurant industry.

HAC Student Association Tours Three Toronto Hotels

HAC Tour of Toronto HotelsThe Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) student association had a successful event this week! On Monday, October 27th, twenty HAC-UOG members went to Toronto to tour three hotel properties: the Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont Royal York, and the Fairmont Corporate Offices. Students were able to interact with senior HR Managers as well as Guelph alumni working at each location.
