2021 Outstanding Staff Recognition Awards Presented

The annual OAC Outstanding Staff Recognition Awards were presented at the virtual "OAC Welcome Back Event" held on September 23, 2021. These staff awards recognize excellent work performance, willingness to help others, contributions toward the betterment of workplace operations, and efforts in making OAC a better place to work overall. The recipients of these awards are nominated by their colleagues. Congratulations to all recipients!

OAC releases Doctoral Destinations Project

The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) has released findings from a new project, Doctoral Destinations: PhDs with Impact, which highlights PhD career pathways. It is the first under the umbrella of OAC’s Graduate Destinations Project. 

U of G’s Research Excellence Awards Honour Seven Early-Career Researchers

Seven University of Guelph researchers exploring subjects from Indigenous history in North America to improving the availability of safe and healthy food have received the 2021 U of G Research Excellence Awards.

The awards program highlights the achievements of recently tenured faculty members and helps to raise their profile among external funding agencies. The $5,000 awards are sponsored by the Office of Research and the Office of the Provost.

U of G, Champion Petfoods Announce New Chair in Pet Nutrition

Improving pet nutrition and health is the goal of a University of Guelph animal scientist who has been named as the inaugural Champion Petfoods Chair in Canine and Feline Nutrition, Physiology and Metabolism.

Dr. Anna Kate Shoveller, Department of Animal Biosciences, will also lead a new international research collaboration under a five-year grant from Champion Petfoods based in Edmonton. The new group will study critical pet food nutrition topics and train students for leadership roles in North America’s pet food and nutrition industry.

U of G Biocomposites Researcher Awarded Royal Society of Canada Medal

A world-renowned University of Guelph scientist has been honoured by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for research helping to reduce the environmental impacts of plastics in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Amar Mohanty, director of U of G’s Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre (BDDC) and an internationally recognized leader in bioplastics and biocomposites used in everything from car parts to consumer goods, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Miroslaw Romanowski Medal.

OAC Staff Recognized through U of G Exemplary Staff Award

Tom Smith, a technician in the Department of Plant Agriculture, received the Hidden Hero Recognition Award at the U of G Community Breakfast. Smith has worked for 37 years in peanut, canola and dry bean breeding. Working with Dr. Peter Pauls, he designs and executes field trials for variety development and for graduate student experimental projects.

Two U of G Researchers Named to Royal Society College

Two University of Guelph professors have been named to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists .

Dr. Melissa Perreault, Department of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Asim Biswas, School of Environmental Sciences, will join eight other U of G faculty members named to the prestigious group since its establishment in 2014.

Van Acker Reappointed OAC Dean

Dr. Rene Van Acker has been reappointed dean of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) for a five-year term.

The decision follows a review by a committee of faculty, students and staff led by Dr. Gwen Chapman, provost and vice-president (academic). The effective renewal date is Sept. 1, 2021.

“Under Dr. Van Acker’s leadership and guidance, OAC has experienced incredible growth and attained new levels of excellence, allowing us to remain at the forefront of agriculture and food, nationally and globally,” Chapman said.
