CFI Awards Nearly $ 1 Million to U of G Researchers

Five University of Guelph research projects will receive a federal investment worth almost $1 million for studies ranging from Indigenization strategies to nutrition and health to biomass fuels.

Today, François-Philippe Champagne, federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced more than $77 million to support 332 research infrastructure projects at 50 universities across the country.

U of G Helping Judge Canadian Space Agency Deep Space Food Challenge

Whenever the first food plants are grown on the moon or during the inaugural voyage to Mars, a University of Guelph researcher may be able to claim some credit for helping to get them there.

This year, Dr. Tom Graham, a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences (SES), was named co-chair of a newly assembled national jury, vetting ideas for growing crops in space – a key requirement for long-duration space flight or NASA’s moon base, planned beyond 2024.

Four U of G Students Receive Prestigious Vanier and Banting Awards

Three University of Guelph PhD candidates and one post-doctoral researcher will receive the Government of Canada’s most prestigious scholarships, worth $50,000 to $70,000 a year.

Tyler Black, Jude Frie and Eleonore Lebeuf-Taylor will receive Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. The awards recognize top Canadian and international doctoral students for academic excellence and research potential. The awards are named for former Governor General Georges Vanier and provide $50,000 per year for up to three years.

OAC Dean lent expertise to “Future of Agri-Tech” forum

The “Future of Agri-Tech” in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the potential for Canadian collaboration was the focus of a two-day virtual forum hosted by the Canada Arab Business Council in June.  

The forum brought together agri-food and technology experts from Canada and the UAE. OAC Dean Rene Van Acker sat on a panel to discuss agri-tech research and education. Additional panelists included Dr. Charbel Tarraf from the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, Dr. Gil Ha Yoon from Sultan Qaboos University and Dr. Alex Melnitchouck from Olds College.

New Profs in Landscape Architecture

The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) is pleased to welcome Afshin Ashari and Zannah Matson as new assistant professors in landscape architecture.

Afshin Ashari, comes to SEDRD from professional practice, most recently working with Brooks McIlroy Inc. in Toronto; an interdisciplinary firm of architects, landscape architects, planners, and urban designers.

U of G’s Ridgetown Campus Celebrates the Class of 2021

The University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus celebrated the achievements of graduating students who have completed one of the seven academic programs offered.

Graduates successfully completed their academic requirements in the Associate Diplomas in Agriculture, Environmental Management, Equine Care & Management, Horticulture and Veterinary Technology, along with graduates in the Veterinary Office Administration Certificate and the in-class portion of the Dairy Herdsperson Apprenticeship program.

School of Environmental Sciences names new director

Dr. Paul Sibley has been appointed as director of the School of Environmental Sciences. He begins his five-year-term on September 1, 2021.

"I am very excited to commence this next chapter of my career,” says Sibley. “I am grateful to everyone who has shown support and I look forward to working with our faculty, staff and students over the next five years to continue to grow and strengthen the already outstanding research and teaching programs in the School of Environmental Sciences.”

U of G Selects 3-Minute Thesis Winners

With just 180 seconds on the clock and one slide to work from, 11 grad students recently competed for the chance to win a $1,000 prize and the opportunity to move on to the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) provincial rounds.

In this annual competition, students use plain language to present their graduate thesis to a panel of judges within three minutes.

Top prize and the Community Choice award went to Claire Mindus, Animal Biosciences, whose thesis explored the use of probiotic bacteria to reduce feather pecking in chickens. The Community Choice award is voted on by the public.
