New IT Services Technician

The OAC Dean’s Office is pleased to welcome Abdul Kusebati as IT Services Technician. He began in this new role on January 4, 2021.

Kusebati will provide desktop IT support, including personal computer hardware, operating systems, and personal productivity applications. This includes diagnosis and resolution of issues, providing training, and software and hardware installation and troubleshooting.

Our Sympathies: Gordon James King

It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Dr. Gordon James King on January 7, 2021. King was a faculty member at the University of Guelph from 1968-1998 in the Department of Animal Science (now the Department of Animal Biosciences). He was appointed University Professor Emeritus upon his retirement.

New Ontario Agriculture Worker Safety and Awareness Certificate launched

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has launched an online training program for workers new to the agricultural sector, created in partnership with the University of Guelph – Ridgetown Campus Business Development Centre. The Ontario Agriculture Worker Safety and Awareness Certificate is geared towards helping job seekers become more familiar with on-farm safety, while making it easier for employers to train new hires.

Over the course of the last nine months, COVID-19 has proved to be challenging for everyone. People in the equine industry have faced significant hardship, isolation and financial impacts. These unforeseen circumstances provided an opportunity for horse enthusiasts to come together and discuss how to best support each other during these unprecedented times.

New U of G Environmental Science Program Rooted in Indigenous Wisdom and Practice

Indigenous and non-Indigenous approaches to environmental protection will come together in a new University of Guelph degree program that is the first of its kind in Canada. The four-year bachelor of Indigenous environmental science and practice (BIESP) program will be launched next fall. Based in the Ontario Agricultural College’s (OAC) School of Environmental Sciences, the program emphasizes Indigenous knowledge systems alongside cutting-edge training in western environmental science.

U of G Arboretum Receives Gift to Expand Gardens

A set of gardens in the University of Guelph Arboretum will be revitalized and expanded through a $100,000 gift from the Gosling Foundation. The gift will support the renewal of the Arboretum’s Gosling Wildlife Gardens and expand their infrastructure, plantings, signs and features.

SES Director Named OAC Associate Dean (Academic)

The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Jon Warland as the Associate Dean (Academic). His five-year term beings on January 1, 2021.

"Jon will be a great addition to our Dean's office leadership team bringing a deep interest in pedagogy and human resources expertise," says Van Acker. “He is the right person to lead OAC's academic commitments and aspirations and will be able to build on the tremendous momentum built over the last decade in the academic portfolio.”

Province Funds New Field Crop Services Building at U of G’s Ridgetown Campus

The University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus has received $6.5 million from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs toward construction of a new field crop services building.

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, made the announcement today at Ridgetown Campus.
