Food Scientist Recognized for Nutraceutical Research

University of Guelph food science professor Dr. Paul Spagnuolo, who researches bioactive compounds found in food, has received a Young Investigator Award for Outstanding Research from the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS).

The award, supported by Abbott Laboratories Co., recognizes an investigator’s overall contribution to research.

Our Sympathies: Herb Driver

It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Dr. Herbert 'Herb' Driver on March 16, 2021. Herb was a professor of agricultural economics in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics for 18 years. 

Viewing and slideshow will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Sunday, March 21, 2021 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Herb's obituary can be found here.

College Royal Goes Virtual in 97th Year

The University of Guelph’s iconic College Royal open house will happen virtually this year.

In its 97th year, the event runs March 20-21 at VirtualCollegeRoyal.com.

Unlike a typical year, when thousands of people visit campus to take in events, displays and learning experiences, the 2021 edition of the open house will bring some of those offerings into homes via the web.

Our Sympathies: Yves Surry

It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Dr. Yves Surry on March 6, 2021. Surry received his PhD in 1988 from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business (now the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics).

New Scandrett Family Scholarship in Indigenous Environmental Science

A new scholarship is available for students entering the Bachelor of Indigenous Environmental Science and Practice (BIESP) program. The $2,600 “Scandrett Family Scholarship in Indigenous Environmental Science” will be awarded annually to a student entering the program who showcases strong leadership in volunteer activities within the environmental sector and/or the community. The endowed scholarship was established by the Scandrett family to promote the engagement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders in developing productive, sustainable and environmentally-sound land use practices and policies.

OAC Research Projects Receive $4M in Federal Funding

Supercharging microbes to gobble up a hazardous chemical that can threaten underground drinking water supplies is the goal for University of Guelph scientists receiving nearly $2.4 million in new federal research funding.

Dr. Kari Dunfield, a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences, will lead a University-industry project to harness “pollution-eating bacteria” to chew through a hazardous chemical found in shallow bedrock above a deeper natural drinking water aquifer in a southern Ontario town.

Drs. Swanton and Marshall Named Professor Emeriti

Drs. Stephen Marshall (School of Environmental Sciences) and Clarence Swanton (Department of Plant Agriculture) have been named University Professor Emeriti. Traditionally, the University of Guelph presents its University Professor Emeriti and Faculty Awards during convocation ceremonies. With COVID-19 restrictions in place and the inability to gather for convocation, a special online ceremony was held to present these awards – the highest honours bestowed by the University of Guelph. University Professor Emeriti designations are made on the recommendation of the Senate to those who demonstrate sustained, outstanding scholarship that is internationally recognized.

New online cheese making certificate

The Department of Food Science of the University of Guelph has launched a new Cheese Maker Certificate for professional cheesemakers. The online certificate includes six online courses on topics such as fermentation, quality assurance, ripening, grading, composition and yield control.

Two OAC Profs Named Research Leadership Chairs

Profs. Tina Widowski and Claudia Wagner-Riddle have been named Research Leadership Chairs (RLC) by the University.

“The RLC program promotes and sustains the groundbreaking research happening at the University of Guelph. These outstanding researchers have remarkable records of excellence in their respective disciplines, and we are proud that they make University of Guelph the home for their research and delighted to recognize all of the work that they have done and continue to do,” said Dr. Malcolm Campbell, vice-president (research).
