Commitment to Indigenization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (IEDI)
The University of Guelph recognizes that an inclusive campus and a culture of inclusion are institutional and social imperatives. A culture of inclusion necessitates the involvement of stakeholders with a wide array of lived experiences, identities and perspectives on the Board of Governors and Senate to support, oversee and drive a strategic and system-wide approach to IEDI.
The University is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and to designing, reviewing, and rebuilding structures – including policies, programs, and practices – that are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all. In keeping with this commitment, nominations of qualified individuals from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities including those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Colour; persons with a disability or who identify as differently abled; persons of all genders, and sexual orientations; and those with a demonstrable track record of confronting oppression and promoting belonging in their organizations and communities are strongly encouraged.
About Senate and Board of Governors
Participating as an elected student member provides students with a unique opportunity to contribute to governance of the University, helping to influence policy and issues that affect the quality of experience and education at the University of Guelph.
The University functions with a bicameral governance structure set out under the University of Guelph Act [1](1964), which defines the responsibilities of the Board of Governors [2] and the Senate [3]. Senate is responsible for academic programs, regulations, and policies, whereas the Board of Governors oversees the government, conduct, management and control of the University and its property, revenues, expenditures, business and affairs.
Nomination and Election Process
The Board of Governors Undergraduate and Graduate Student Electoral Procedures [4] and the Senate Regulations Governing the Election of Students to Senate [5] include provisions for representation of students on the Board and Senate. Elections are held annually during the Winter semester. Should an insufficient number of nominations be received during the Winter election period to fill the available student seats a by-election is held at the beginning of the following Fall semester.
Members of the Board of Governors must be a least 18 years of age and cannot be an undischarged bankrupt. Board members must also abide by the Good Governance Policy for the Board of Governors [6] and related disclosure requirements.
Campaigning
As per section 9.6. of the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Electoral Procedures and section 9f. of the Regulations Governing the Election of Students to Senate, each candidate shall enjoy the right to campaign and inform the student body of their candidacy in a manner consistent with relevant University policies and regulations. The following is a non-exhaustive list of related University policies and procedures:
