Truth or Myth

Myth: I should take courses with multiple choice tests.
Truth: Multiple choice questions seldom reflect real life situations.

In the real world, you will not be given a problem and four options. Instead, you will likely need to generate possible solutions yourself. Courses with essays or short answer questions will let you learn and develop problem solving skills.

Myth: I should take courses with an easy grade
Truth: More often than not, grades are not the most important factor in getting a job – demonstrable skills are.

Striving for good grades is important, but not at the expense of missing out on an opportunity to developmentally push yourself. An interviewer will ask you about times you have struggled and times you have exhibited a particular ability or skill. An easy course will not help you through a job interview. It will also not show that you are willing to take risks, put yourself in a complicated situation, or are adaptable.

Myth: I should avoid Friday or morning courses.
Truth: Determining your education based on schedule preference limits your ability to develop a breadth of learning opportunities.

When the time comes to work or co-op, you will likely not be given a flexible work arrangement. Also, Friday and morning classes tend to be smaller, giving you more opportunities to interact with classmates and the instructor. They also provide more opportunity to develop complex skills and build meaningful relationships that could be useful in the future in terms of networking, mentorship, reference letters, etc.

Myth: I should take a courses about what I know.
Truth: A breadth of courses from distinct areas facilitates learning different skills or developing similar skills in different ways.

Courses that fall within your comfort zone will not give you as many opportunities for the kinds of meaningful and challenging experiences that promote new skills acquisition.

Myth: I should not raise my hand in class.  I should also avoid office hours.
Truth: Engaging in discussions with the instructor enhances content learning and promotes skill development.
