Students and Professor Present Paper at HITEC

HTM students Ashley Ferreira and Fanyi Wei, as well as Professor Justin Taillon presented a paper, "Towards Understanding the Consequences of Hotel PMS Risk Aversion" at HITEC this week.  HITEC, an annual conference with more than 8,000 attendees, is being held in Minneapolis, MN, this year.  Three HTM students are attending the conference - hopefully we will have even more next year when the event is held in Los Angeles! To attend you must be an HFTP member in good standing - food and lodging expenses are covered for all student attendees.

Skills Training Prepares Grad Students for Industry Jobs

Assistant Prof. Mike von Massow helps to deliver the Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) Scholarship Program which is offered by the Partnership Agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Rural Affairs. A recent At Guelph article highlight's from a grad student's perspective, how this program which integrates science, business and marketing, and helped prepare her for work in her industry.

HTM 'Bermudian' Tourism Student Interns in New York

SimonHighlighting a “very important initiative” to gain experience in the tourism industry for the “best and the brightest” Bermudians, Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell paid tribute to the David H Allen Memorial Internship.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, the Minister acknowledged four young Bermudians selected as interns as a result of the initiative.

The days of whipping out a cell phone calculator or scribbling long division on a napkin when the bill arrives may soon be over.

The New York restaurant, Sushi Yasuda, recently announced that it has implemented a no-tipping policy. Instead, the restaurant increased its prices by 15 per cent across the menu, and servers paid a proper salary and benefits based on that.

Professors Awarded by SoTL

Professors Joan Flaherty & Chris Choi have been awarded $11,000 from the  Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Fund (SoTL). The scholarship is offered through the  Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support and the Office of the Associate Vice President (Academic) founded in 2011. This fund is intended to encourage and support research related to teaching and learning at the University of Guelph.

“Straws suck,” reads a T-shirt worn by Prof. Bruce McAdams, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. “Not everyone gets it,” he admits of the pun, but they would if they had a meal at PJ’s Restaurant, where straws have been banned to reduce waste.
