The University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP) will be holding its 3rd annual forum on Thursday, October 3rd on campus at the Lifetime Learning Centre (OVC), Room 1714 at 7:00 p.m.  Featured speaker is Jonathan Bloom, Journalist, Consultant, Food Waste Expert and Author of "American Wasteland".  Also speaking will be Robin Poirier of Ocean Wise and HTM's Professor Bruce McAdams.

Sponsor, Earls Kitchen & Bar will be holding a reception in PJ's Restaurant in Macdonald Stewart Hall immediately after the forum.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management Student Association (HTMSA) is launching a new HTM Mentorship Program!

The program will create a connection between 1st and 4th/5th year students, helping them become more engaged within the School and the U of G community. 

In celebration of Canada Food Day Prof. Erna van Duren, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Julia Christensen Hughes, Dean of the College of Management and Economics, compared some of the "real costs" of buying, preparing and cooking a chicken picnic.  Using the lowest-cost food they purchased at a discount grocery store, they were able to create the entire meal for just $13.33. The same low-cost meal totalled $15.80 when purchased at a higher-end grocery store, $16.50 at a farmers’ market and $17.75 from a specialty retailer.

A joint University of Guelph and City of Guelph research study on food waste behaviour began this Monday and runs for two weeks. Research teams will visit 300 randomly selected Guelph homes to weigh organic, recyclable and garbage bags. After, the homeowners will be invited to take place in a survey.

This past semester, two students (Matthew Acevedo and Lindsay Barron) undertook a project to evaluate hospitality student perceptions of their industry as employer.  They surveyed students from across Canada.  Their report is linked.

The Centre for International Programs has appointed Dr. Marion Joppe, as the Director of the Winter 2015 Paris semester. This is a study abroad program where students will live in Paris, France for 4 months and take 4 courses in English for credit through the University of Guelph. The program is open to all students on campus and information sessions will be held in February 2014. If you have any further questions, please email Dr.

Mike von Massow and Bruce McAdams attended the third annual International Conference on Tourism and Hospitality Management in Athens, Greece and presented their paper on improving sustainability curriculum in our restaurant management course which was the genesis of the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project.  The paper was also selected to be published in a special issue of the Journal Touristic Issues.

Calling all wine enthusiasts!!  HTM will be offering the following WSET certifications in September; Level 1 Award in Wines & Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits. Please note that Level 1 will be offered in the Fall only.

Professor Justin Taillon has worked in the Peruvian Amazon three times in the past four years. His research in the region focuses on marketing-based conservation through hotels and tourism, particularly with the Ese'Eja indigenous persons from Southeastern Peru and Northeastern Bolivia. This summer he was joined by University of Guelph Environmental Engineering Professor Khosrow Farahbakhsh and three research assistants: CME PhD students Sean Hingston, HTM undergraduate student Emmanuel Cini, and environmental engineering Master's student Rachael Marshall.
