Funding Graduate Studies
Our Graduate students are typically supported through a combination of four sources of funding
Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are hired in the department to conduct labs/tutorials, mark assignments/tests, work in our Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre and to conduct other departmental duties such as invigilation and course evaluations.
Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) are designed to allow you to collaborate with your supervisors in current research projects. GRAs are paid by the student's supervisors from their research grants. You are strongly advised to contact potential supervisors regarding GRA funding availability.
Scholarships and bursaries are available from the University and from the College of Physical & Engineering Science (CPES). For some scholarships, you are automatically considered and do not need to apply. Other scholarships and bursaries require a separate application. You are encouraged to speak to your potential Research Advisor about the availability of scholarships and bursaries. Search for available Graduate Awards.
For example, we are pleased to be able to award competitive entrance scholarships such as the Graduate Excellence Scholarships (valued at $30,000 for new domestic Ph.D. students), the Graduate Tuition Scholarship (valued at $8,000 per year for four years for new domestic Ph.D students, and $8,000 per year for two years for new domestic M.Sc. students). No separate application is required to be considered for these awards.
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is provided by the Government of Ontario. It requires an separate application, typically due in the fall for the following academic year. For specific details, visit this information page.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is provided by the Government of Canada. It requires an separate application, typically due in the fall for the following academic year. For specific details, visit the NSERC website.
