Guelph Campus is now Tobacco- and Smoke-Free
As communities around the world celebrate World No Tobacco Day, U of G’s Guelph campus marks its first day as a tobacco- and smoke-free space.
“It’s something that will help us create a healthier future for everyone on our campus,” said Don O’Leary, vice-president (finance, administration and risk). “It’s an important step for us.”
As of today, smoking and vaping of any substance – including cannabis – and the use of smokeless tobacco (e.g., chewing tobacco) is prohibited on the Guelph campus and in the Arboretum. A map of campus boundaries is available online. The policy covers all faculty, staff and students as well as visitors to campus.
The new tobacco- and smoke-free campus policy was developed through an 18-month process involving community consultation and input.
O’Leary emphasized the University’s support for those looking to quit smoking or cut back. “Our advisory committee has compiled a number of resources to help folks,” he said. “It’s important to be supportive and respectful of one another through this change.”
