Celebrating Healthy Workplace Month with a Campus Mile
On October 1, 2019 faculty and staff were invited to Johnston Green to celebrate the start of U of G's third annual Healthy Workplace Month. 180+ employees came out on an unseasonably warm Fall afternoon to participate in the Campus Mile walk, run or roll through campus.
Vice-President Don O'Leary provided opening remarks as Chair of the Wellness@Work Advisory Committee and encouraged employees to get involved throughout the month. Sarah Mau, Chair of the Wellness@Work Programming Committee, highlighted a few of the free upcoming events for faculty and staff.
Gryph led the participants in a warm-up before kicking off the one-mile walk through campus that was marked by volunteers. At the end, participants enjoyed refreshments, a chance to spin the prize wheel, photo booth and social time to connect with their colleagues. Thanks to everyone who came out!
Here is what participants told us:
"By participating in the Campus Mile, I had the opportunity to...
- exercise, take in the beauty of our campus, interact with other members of the campus community.
- recharge.
- meet new people, go for a walk on a beautiful day, be part of the community.
- engage with the University community in a fun, spirited way.
- go for a walk with my colleagues, get some fresh air and get my blood flowing!
- meet other wellness@work champions on campus and see how popular W@W activities are on campus."
"It's an important reminder to take time away for yourself while you're at work. Rather than spending the whole day sitting in front of a computer, you can get up and get outside and take a break when you need one."
"I liked the warm up with Gryph (loved it!), the walk, spinning the wheel, and the food! And the adorable kids OMG!!"
