U of G Researchers Prove Slow-Growing Chickens More Humane in Groundbreaking Study

Raising slower-growing broiler chickens means less efficiency for producers and potentially higher costs for consumers, but it would improve the welfare of millions of birds, according to the largest and most comprehensive study of broiler chicken welfare worldwide by University of Guelph researchers.

Gryphon's LAAIR grants help researchers develop products for the growing agri-food sector

From skin care to brewing to plant greenhouses to cows and horses, five projects will receive funding from the Gryphon’s LAAIR program this year to help researchers pursue research innovations with commercial potential.

The Gryphon’s LAAIR (Leading to the Accelerated Adoption of Innovative Research) program, funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, helps to create new products and services for the growing agri-food sector.

To assist researchers with the development of a data management plan (DMP), the McLaughlin Library is leading a workshop to provide an overview of data management plans and discuss strategies and resources for completing a DMP.

Note: All researchers are welcome but there will be a focus on creating DMPs for projects funded by the Alliance and Food From Thought.

Beat disease, eat your beans: Researchers develop motivators for bean consumption in older adults

Beans and other legumes are vital, affordable, nutrient-dense keys to reducing risk of disease, such as obesity and diabetes. That’s especially true for Ontario’s aging population—in Canada, a quarter of all citizens are 65 years or older and naturally prone to health challenges.

To effectively promote the benefits of beans, researchers set out to benchmark and encourage bean consumption in older adults.
