Course objectives:
This is an introduction to the greatest historian of the ancient world. His first book sets the standards by which most of the later significant historians were measured and by a careful reading and analysis of the text, we will begin to examine the history and politics of the Greek world at a pivotal moment in the history of the West.
Learning outcomes:
1. to introduce students to the culture, and to one of the great writers of the late fifth century, that helped to formulate much of Western culture.
2. to initiate understanding of the purpose of critical review of a text that is now 2,500 years old within a proper cultural context.
3. to help students to build confidence in the critical evaluation of information
