Classical Studies (Major or Minor)

An Honours B.A. degree in Classics is a professional requirement for teaching Latin (or Greek or Classics) at high school or undertaking graduate study in Classics. An honours degree in Classics at Guelph (provided it includes an extensive component of Greek and Latin) will gain admission to most Canadian and international graduate programs in Classics.

Graduates from the Classics program have gone on to careers in a wide variety of areas, from archeological or museum work and library science, to business, journalism, international education and tourism.

 

European Studies (Major or Minor)

Area of concentration in European Culture and Civilization or European Business Studies

The interdisciplinary European Studies Program prepares its graduates for positions in many diverse fields, including:

  • Customs and Immigration
  • Diplomatic/Foreign Service
  • International Business/Management, Trade and Commerce
  • Journalism
  • Municipal and Regional Government
  • Public Relations
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Law
  • International education
  • Arts administration

 

French Studies (Major or Minor)

Graduates with a mastery of French have gone on to work in the following fields:

  • Customs and Immigration
  • Diplomatic/Foreign Service
  • Teaching French at all levels
  • Translation
  • International Business/Management, Trade and Commerce
  • International education
  • Journalism
  • Municipal, Regional, Provincial and Federal Government work
  • Public Relations
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Law

 

Spanish and Hispanic Studies (Minor)

Graduates of Spanish and Hispanic Studies pursue careers in university and high school teaching, in the tourism and hospitality industries, in international import and export, in diplomatic services, in immigration services, in journalism, in translation, in law and in a variety of other fields.

 

German Studies or Italian Studies (Minor)

With the achievement of economic integration, the European Union is the biggest market in the Western World, and Germany has the largest economy in the EU. The European Union is Canada’s second most important partner in business and trade, and the second biggest investor in Canada.

Canada and the European Union collaborate in many joint ventures, in diplomacy, research, world security, justice, northern development etc. Completing a minor in German or Italian can lead to careers in the following areas:

  • Foreign Service
  • International Trade and Commerce
  • International Education
  • Journalism
  • Public Relations
  • Teaching German or Italian in high schools
  • Tourism and Hospitality
